Walnut Grove Elementary School in Southlake will undergo renovations following a favorable second reading from the Southlake City Council on Oct. 15.

On behalf of Carroll ISD, design and engineering firm Hart, Gaugler and Associates requested a zoning change and a submitted site plan so the school district can construct building additions, totaling 6,389 square feet, on the west side of the school, according to meeting documents. These additions are to be used as storm shelters.

In addition to the storm shelters, the campus will be renovated to include two classrooms, space to relocate the playground, two maker-space additions and 40 proposed overflow parking spaces.

The proposed site plan also includes the installation of a chain-link fence and gate for an existing storage area on campus; building elevations; and modifications to provide an improved overflow parking area near the front of the school on the east side of the school.

The school had previously installed Tuff Track grass at different spots on campus. The material allows automobiles on it without causing the grass to sink. But over time, it has become warped and ineffective, so it will be replaced with porous concrete material, said John Haugen, bond program manager for CISD.
