The Katy ISD Education Foundation held its annual Fireflies & Food Trucks on Oct. 17 at No Label Brewing Co. The event raises money for the foundation's Imagination Teacher Grants, which provide financial support for innovative classroom programs, said Janet Theis, KISD's executive director of community partnerships and an administrative liaison board member for the foundation. About 700 people attended the 2019 Fireflies & Food Trucks event, which is expected to raise $80,000, Theis said. The foundation's fundraising goal is to raise $350,000 for the year. Several district teachers and staff—including Natalie Jones and Alicia Leung, who had received grants for the 2019-20 school year—attended the event. Jones and Leung are counselors at Beckendorff Junior High School and received a $5,000 grant to build a library to reduce stress and anxiety. The library includes books, toys, yoga mats and special seating. Both students and teachers can check out items, and students are working to craft videos that teach mindfulness and how to use the library's materials, Jones and Leung said. Katy ISD Education Foundation's next community fundraising event will be Groove, an evening gala held annually in the spring.
