The Texas Department of Transportation has been working since December 2016 to construct an overpass on FM 1774 from FM 1486 to north of FM 1488. TxDOT Public Information Officer Emily Black confirmed in a Sept. 25 email that the overpass is scheduled to open to drivers Sept. 30, barring any inclement weather.

A traffic switch is scheduled Sept. 30 to direct traffic to begin use of the overpass, according to Montgomery County Precinct 2 Commissioner Charlie Riley's Facebook page.

In an email to district families, Magnolia ISD officials announced recommendations Sept. 25 for arrival and dismissal paths following the opening of the overpass and the traffic switch. The district's recommendations for arrivals are as follows:

  • Drivers traveling south on FM 1774 should get in the right lane and loop under the overpass. Drivers will then merge with northbound traffic and turn right into the Magnolia West High School entrance.

  • Drivers traveling north over the overpass will need to be in the right lane to turn right into the MWHS entrance.

  • Drivers traveling north on the FM 1774 feeder road—the current FM 1774 route—will see the road narrow to one lane. Drivers will merge with southbound traffic looping under the overpass and then merge again with northbound overpass drivers.

School resource officers will assist traffic exiting onto FM 1774 from MWHS, and buses will continue exiting the campus onto FM 1486, according to district information.

Smaller remaining items for the overpass project will be complete by the end of the year, Black said.
