During the Dec. 4 meeting City Council conditionally approved the first reading of a request to allow Central Market to implement curbside pickup service at its location on East Southlake Boulevard and directed the applicant to make one notable design change. The original concept plan included a proposal for a covered parking structure in front of Central Market and the Toy Maven store, which is next door. However, council members expressed disapproval for the idea. Mayor Laura Hill said a covered parking structure interferes with the look and style of the city. If this was allowed for Central Market it would bring an avalanche of similar requests from other businesses, and City Council would have no grounds to deny them, she said. “That’s not the look we want for Southlake,” Hill said. Currently, no business in Southlake has permission for covered parking, she said. Other council members, including Shahid Shafi, agreed with Hill. “I love the idea of curbside delivery,” Shafi said. “I hate the idea of the provided covered parking.” However, the concept plan passed the first reading with the understanding it would be revised to exclude provisions for covered parking in time for a second reading at a later date. The public hearing regarding this plan is scheduled to take place Jan. 15, and a second reading is needed before plans are officially approved, according to the meeting agenda packet.
