In a report on road congestion produced annually by the Texas Transportation Institute, several Cy-Fair-area roads saw traffic get worse between 2017 and 2018.
The TTI's report, released Oct. 22, lists two Cy-Fair-area roads among the 100 most congested in the state. Hwy. 290 between Hwy. 6 and Beltway 8 was ranked No. 24, and FM 1960 between Hwy. 290 and Hwy. 249 was ranked No. 41. These two sections of road were ranked No. 45 and No. 50, respectively, in 2017.
The stretch of Hwy. 290 from Spring Cypress Road to Hwy. 6, which previously ranked outside of the top 1,000, rose to No. 452 on the list.
The cost of congestion increased dramatically on several Cy-Fair roads as well. This metric is calculated with a number a factors, including loss of productivity as drivers wait in traffic as well as fuel wasted due to stop-and-go conditions.
Of Cy-Fair's roads in the top 100, the Hwy. 290 section from Hwy. 6 to Beltway 8 saw an increase of about $15 million in congestion cost, from roughly $25.8 million in 2017 to about $40.8 million in 2018. The FM 1960 section saw an increase of $5 million, from $25.5 million to $30.5 million.
Other Cy-Fair roads that saw a jump in the rankings included FM 529, West Road between Barker Cypress Road and Hwy. 290, and Hwy. 249 between Perry Road and Beltway 8.
The study also tracks the delay drivers experience per mile on each road annually. Drivers on Hwy. 290 between Hwy. 6 and Beltway 8 collectively experience about 433,195 hours of delay per year per mile, up from 277,655 hours in 2017.
Several roads saw a drop in rank, the most significant of which in Cy-Fair being Beltway 8 between Hwy. 290 and Hwy. 249. This section of road dropped from a rank of No. 139 in 2017 to No. 257 in 2018. The annual delay per mile dropped from just under 143,000 hours in 2017 to 100,586 hours in 2018. The congestion cost also fell from $18 million in 2017 to $12.7 million in 2018.
The top two spots were both Houston roads. Loop 610 between I-10 and Hwy. 59 South was ranked first, and Hwy. 59 South between Loop 610 and Hwy. 288 was ranked second.
