McKinney City Council authorized the city manager Feb. 20 to enter into an agreement to join the Waze Connected Citizens Program. Matt Tilke, transportation engineering manager with the city of McKinney, said the city is expected to begin using the service in March.

Here is how the program works:

  • Users download the Waze app to their phone and submit accidents, traffic jams, hazards, potholes, stopped vehicles and other mobility issues. The app notifies drivers about road hazards and closures.

  • Under the partnership, the city can provide real-time road closures, construction and major traffic events. This partnership is intended to improve the city’s emergency response and provide enhanced public information related to
    road conditions.
