Incumbent Mayor Steve Adler raised more than $283,000 in the opening fundraising period for his re-election campaign, according to finance reports released by his campaign on Wednesday.

According to Adler’s campaign manager Jim Wick, the $283,163.54 raised by the mayor between Nov. 6 and Dec. 31 came from nearly 1,100 contributors, a record number of contributors for an incumbent Austin mayor in their fundraising report.

“I’m excited and humbled by the number of contributors to my re-election campaign in such a short period of time,” Adler said in a statement.

Although the reporting period covers July 1, 2017 to Dec. 31, 2017, incumbent candidates running for re-election can only begin raising money 365 days before the election per recent changes to the city’s campaign finance rules.

“From artists and musicians to engineers and executives, Mayor Adler’s support is deep and broad,” said Laura Hernandez, deputy campaign manager and finance director, in a news release.

According to the release, Adler did not accept contributions from political action committees, business entities or bundlers, which Wick said are people who solicit and obtain donations on behalf of a candidate.

So far, only former Council Member Laura Morrison has announced she will challenge Adler in his mayoral re-election bid.
