The Arc of Katy announced its new president of its board of directors earlier this week. Fred Shafer will take on the role, his first priority being to work with the board to develop a strategic plan, he said.

“It’s been about 40 years that I’ve been working in special education,” Shafer said.

He said that he wanted to improve community awareness of the organization and the services they provide. The Arc of Katy is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that serves children and adults with developmental disabilities and delays, primarily through camps and activities.

The Arc's summer camp accept clients ages 16 years and older, while day camps during the school year, and arts and crafts events for are also available.

“The camp provides an opportunity for those with developmental disabilities and developmental delays to participate in social and recreational activities that otherwise they may not be able to be engaged in,” Shafer said.

His background includes Katy ISD executive director for special education, counseling and psychological services; and director of special education for the Region 4 Education Service Center in Houston, among other positions.

He and his wife, Patti Shafer, also volunteer at their namesake Fred and Patti Shafer Elementary in Katy.
