Construction starts in late August to repave Parmer Lane in North Austin, and the city plans to activate a new pedestrian hybrid beacon in Northwest Austin. Those projects aren't the only ones slated to start in late summer. See what other construction work will begin soon or is in the pipeline in the Northwest Austin area. 1. Resurfacing Parmer Lane The Texas Department of Transportation is resurfacing Parmer Lane from MoPac to the I-35 southbound frontage road. Timeline: late August-October Cost: $1.5 million Funding sources: TxDOT 2. North Lamar Boulevard sidewalks The city of Austin is adding new sidewalks to fill in gaps along North Lamar Boulevard from US 183 to Braker Lane. The project includes replacing existing sidewalks. Timeline: June 2017-late 2018 Cost: $1.5 million Funding sources: city of Austin, TxDOT grant 3. Updated Lamar Boulevard bridge railings TxDOT is upgrading and replacing railing near bridges along the roadway from Walnut Creek Metropolitan Park to Payton Gin Road. Timeline: July-fall 2017 Cost: $175,000 Funding source: TxDOT 4. MoPac toll lanes Workers continued paving work in August on the MoPac express toll lanes between Parmer Lane and Cesar Chavez Street. Remaining work includes finishing installation of sound walls, adding the final layer of pavement south of RM 2222, roadway striping, and installing lighting and signs. Part of the northbound toll lane opened last October. The rest of the project could open in stages. Timeline: 2013-late summer 2017 Cost: $204 million Funding sources: various Colony Creek sidewalk The city of Austin plans to add sidewalks on Colony Creek Drive near Padron Elementary School.[/caption] 5. Mobility bond projects In August the city launched an interactive website for residents to view updates on all projects funded through the $720 million bond. One of the first Northwest Austin projects slated for construction will be adding sidewalks that are compliant with Americans with Disabilities Act regulations and curb ramps near Padron Elementary School on Colony Creek Drive from Galewood Drive to West Pointer Lane. Timeline: fall Cost: $50,000 Funding source: 2016 Mobility Bond Program 6. Northern Walnut Creek Trail Phase 1A Construction will begin this fall on the last segment of Phase 1 that will complete the trail in Balcones District Park. A portion of the project is already under construction as part of the Waters Park Relief Main project that aims to increase wastewater capacity near the park. That work to build the trail from under MoPac to the south side of the baseball field at the park will be done this fall. Timeline: fall 2017-2018 Cost:  $847,000 Funding source: city of Austin bonds 7. Northern Walnut Creek Trail Phase 2 The city will finish the design next spring on the extended trail from Walnut Creek Metropolitan Park to I-35. The 10-foot-wide trail will be 1.8 miles long and have two trailheads at North Lamar Boulevard and Oakbrook Drive. Timeline: fall 2018-fall 2019 Cost: $3.5 million-$4 million Funding sources: city of Austin Parks and Recreation Department, 2016 Mobility Bond Program, TxDOT 8. Pedestrian beacon installation The Austin Transportation Department activated a new pedestrian hybrid beacon on Spicewood Springs Road at Texas Plume Road on Aug. 30. The beacon allows a user to push a button and activate a signal to stop traffic and safely cross a road. Timeline: August Cost: $75,000 Funding source: Quarter Cent Fund
