Leander Parks and Recreation Advisory Board met to discuss several parks and program updates tonight, Aug. 8.
1. The second phase of construction at
Veterans Park, including walls engraved with the names of local veterans and park donors, starts within two weeks, Parks and Recreation Department Director Mark Tummons said. Phase 2 also adds a sidewalk connection between the park and Leander Public Library. A grand opening will be held on Veterans Day, Nov. 11. Applications for names to be listed on the honor wall can be found on
www.leandertx.gov.
2. Families can register their children for the Parks and Recreation Department’s
fall Little League baseball until Aug. 18. Games start the weekend after Labor Day, Sept. 4. Interested residents can call 512-528-9909 for more information.
3. Synthetic turf multipurpose fields will be installed at
Robin Bledsoe Park between early September and mid-December. During construction, other features at the park will remain open. Additionally, the Bledsoe Splash Pad does not currently have a shade structure after it fell during recent storms. Tummons said a replacement shade structure is not expected to be installed before the Splash Pad closes in September.
4. Construction on the
Mason Creek Greenway will take place over the winter, and the park will open in the spring, Tummons said. The greenway will feature trails running from the Trails of Leander community off South Bagdad Road to Lakeline Boulevard.
“[I’m] looking forward to getting that done, and it’s going to be an incredible piece,” Tummons said.
5. The parks department is working with the Leander Chamber of Commerce to plan the town’s
Christmas parade and tree lighting on Dec. 2.
