Eanes ISD board of trustees approved a Spanish immersion pilot program Feb. 21 to be implemented at Cedar Creek Elementary School, 3301 Pinnacle Road, Austin, this fall.

EISD Superintendent Tom Leonard said the dual-language program will be offered at the kindergarten level, and it could be expanded to other schools in the coming years depending on interest from parents. The program promotes multicultural learning and will use a 50-50 delivery model, with half of the school day taught in Spanish and the other half taught in English, he said.

“This is a program that can accomplish goals that really cannot be achieved by any other means,” trustee James Kallison said. “It promotes cultural diversity and [allows] our kids to be involved in other languages in a way that just isn’t in a traditional curriculum.”

Cedar Creek Principal Jessica Brown said the program aligns with three of EISD’s priorities: communication skills, social and emotional learning, and innovation.
