Lone Star College System officials are moving forward with clearly defining what campus carry regulations will look like when they are enacted Aug. 1.
After holding 10 forums during the fall 2016 semester and receiving feedback from online surveys, Rand Key, LSCS police commissioner and Campus Carry Task Force chair, addressed the board about what comes next during Thursday night’s meeting.
“Now our focus is shifting to the development training educational materials,” Key said. “Through the open forums and comments that were made, we know the key to us having a very smooth, successful run at the implementation is in proper education and training.”
There are 15 proposed recommendations regarding gun frees zones, license to carry holders’ responsibilities, LSC community education and training and a campus carry safety advisory committee.
Senate Bill 11, also known as the campus carry law, relates to carrying handguns on campuses and other locations associated with institutions of higher learning. Open carry is prohibited by this law.
Training materials for students, faculty and staff are slated to be ready for distribution by the end of March, and signage requirements will be finalized during the spring semester, Key said.
The first reading of the proposed recommendations will come to the board during the March 7 board of trustees meeting.
