At the Grapevine City Council meeting on Nov. 1, Parks and Recreation Director Kevin Mitchell presented two pricing options for the construction of the city's first dog park at Big Bear Creek Park.
One option was to contract the work out for $2,445,000, which would allow parks staff to focus on other projects. The second option was to have the parks and recreation department install portions of the park themselves for $1,550,000, which is nearly $900,000 cheaper.
Mitchell said the department has done this before on previous projects such as Casey's Clubhouse, which is located in Dove Park.
"We would not have to hire additional staff," he said. "We have staff that are more than capable of doing this work and more than happy to do it."
Council ultimately decided to point Mitchell in the self-performing route of constructing the park.
Mitchell said drawings for the park are expected to be done by Feb. 1 with construction to follow after.
