The city of Georgetown Animal Shelter is hosting a ribbon-cutting ceremony at noon Oct. 29 to celebrate the opening of its 250-square-foot cat patio.

The Judith Shirven Catio is named after the donor who gifted $75,000 from her estate to fund construction of the patio after she died in 2013. Shirven, who moved to the Georgetown area in 1999, was a longtime supporter and volunteer for the Friends of the Georgetown Animal Shelter.

A news release from the animal shelter said the catio will improve the lives of cats at the shelter by providing outdoor time, reducing stress, and increasing physical and mental stimulation. The catio also features a jungle gym with scratching posts, ramps and toys.
