Frisco City Council voted tonight to table voting on an appeal for a proposed Oncor substation on Legacy Drive south of Stonebrook Parkway. Council will consider the appeal during the Dec. 6 meeting.
Oncor submitted an appeal to City Council after Frisco Planning and Zoning Commission denied a specific use permit for the substation during the Aug. 23 meeting.
Residents attended tonight's meeting to show their opposition to the proposed substation. Among the concerns, one resident cited the substation's proximity to Allen Elementary School and Legacy Christian Academy as well as its possible effect on home values. Residents also would like to see the land where the substation is proposed to go remain zoned for a commercial development, Frisco resident Jamie Heit said.
"Approving an SUP for an electrical substation just 595 feet away from an elementary school in an area zoned for commercial use against the wishes of over 1,800 of the finest residents would not be a great thing to do," she said. "So I urge you to deny the request and continue to work with Oncor and the residents to find a more suitable solution."
The substation would power the $5 Billion Mile, which includes The Star, The Dallas Cowboys’ new headquarters, other developments and existing Oncor customers throughout the city.
The new proposed substation is needed to keep up with the power demand in Frisco, according to Oncor. Oncor serves Frisco with four substations and half of those are within city limits.
