A lot is going on in the Cy-Fair area this month, but here are the top stories heading into the week of Sept. 19, 2016.

  1. Construction has begun on the Kickerillo-Mischer Preserve in the Vintage Park area at 20215 Chasewood Park Drive, Houston. The 80-acre public park is being constructed as a partnership between Harris County Precinct 4 and the Prestonwood Forest Utility District. Upon completion in spring 2017, the park will include 1.7 miles of paved trail and a restroom facility.

  2. The first round of businesses are preparing to open at Cypress Creek Plaza, 9690 Fry Road, Cypress, where several new businesses were announced last week. Businesses—which include Sapporo Japanese Sushi, Snowflake Donut and a True Companion veterinary office—will start opening through the end of 2016 and beginning of 2017. The center is 80 percent leased.

  3. The deadline to register to vote for November elections is Tuesday Oct. 11. Voter registration forms must be signed and mailed to the Harris County Tax Assessor-Collector—P.O. Box 3527,
    Houston, Texas 77253-3527—at least 30 days before the election date.

  4. The City of Jersey Village will host a public hearing tonight in preparation of adopting its city budget. Capital improvements in the proposed budget include a golf course irrigation project and improvements to the city's water plants and wastewater treatment plans. The proposed property tax rate, set to be adopted Oct. 17, remains at $0.7425 per $100 valuation. A proposed budget can be viewed here.

  5. Cy-Hope's first resale store, The Hope Chest, is now open at 12015 Houston Road, Cypress, near Barker Cypress Road and Hwy. 290. Cy-Hope accepts a variety of donated items, including clothing, books, appliances in working order, retail donations, lawn equipment and tools. Proceeds help fund the nonprofit's many services, including counseling services, feeding 1,600 kids weekly, music and sports initiatives, after-school and summer programs and scholarships. The shop is open Mon.-Fri. from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sat. from 10 a.m.-3 p.m.
