A Central Texas regional transportation agency took the first step toward ending the proposed Lone Star Rail District passenger rail line that would have connected San Antonio and Georgetown.

On Aug. 8 the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization transportation policy board, which comprises local elected officials, approved initiating steps to conclude the plan’s environmental impact statement, or EIS; cease funding; and remove the $2.09 billion plan from CAMPO’s 2040 long-range transportation plan. The final decision to end LSRD will be taken during CAMPO’s Oct. 10 meeting.

This move comes after Union Pacific Corp. terminated an agreement with LSRD in February.

City Council discussed its membership in the rail district during its Aug. 23 workshop, and Georgetown Transportation Services Director Ed Polasek said the council should delay a decision on whether to remain in the district until after CAMPO’s Oct. 10 meeting.

The city has a funds set aside in the proposed fiscal year 2016-17 budget for its LSRD membership dues, which could be directed to other projects if the council decides to leave the district, Polasek said.

CAMPO will host a public hearing on the removal of the LSRD line from the 2040 plan, as well as any other amendments, on Sept. 12.
