Here are 6 things to know this week if you live in The Woodlands:

  1. The fiscal year 2016-17 Montgomery County budget is up for adoption Tuesday morning. A proposed quarter-cent tax cut for county residents was factored into the budget along with an increased budget for the animal shelter.   1. Election season is officially underway. There are nine candidates gunning for one of four positions on The Woodlands Township board of directors. For a list of all candidates on the ballot in the Nov. 8 township election, find out more here.

    Area private schools see student population growth The John Cooper School is building the Rock Center, a new facility for math, science and technology classes set to open in August.[/caption]



  1. At the start of the new academic year, The John Cooper School opened the Rock Math + Science Center. An open house for family and friends of the school is scheduled for Thursday to view the new 55,000-square-foot facility with 16 classrooms, a 125-seat lecture hall and a rooftop garden.



  1. There will be a special hearing with The Woodlands Township board of directors this Wednesday for a public hearing regarding the proposed property tax rate. The rate is projected to remain the same at 23 cents per $100 valuation. The meeting is at 6 p.m. Wednesday at 2801 Technology Forest Boulevard.



  1. Beyond the Pines Music Festival is set to debut this Saturday in The Woodlands at Town Green Park with a lineup of Texas country music favorites. Performers include Aaron Watson, Shooter Jennings and Reckless Kelly. A portion of the proceeds benefits Helping a Hero, Pup Squad Dog Foundation and My Person Foundation. Tickets start at $45 and can be purchased online at www.btpfest.com.

  1. A slew of new fitness-related businesses are coming to The Woodlands area this fall. Yellow Jacket Fitness at 6922 W. Rayford Road and Frog Fitness at 2408 Timberloch Place are now open, while the upcoming Wicked Core at 3555 Rayford Road is set to open in October.
