After the rush of new members at conventional gyms dies down in mid-spring, Clara Bella Fitness owner Ali Webb said business tends to pick up for personal trainers such as herself.
“What we’ve found as trainers over the years here is that March and April is when people tend to realize, ‘I’m not getting this done on my own,’” she said. “We don’t really have that huge first-of-the-year rush as much as the do-it-yourself gyms do, but we tend to get the mid-spring busyness.”
Webb opened her fitness studio in April 2013 after working as a personal trainer and instructor in various gyms.
Although she enjoyed her time in the gym with her clients, Webb said she realized some desired quieter and private personal-training sessions.
In 2015 the business expanded when Fitness Beyond Training, a business offering metabolic testing, nutrition coaching, weight-loss services and general fitness training, opened in the studio.
Webb said the studio is able to offer training and fitness services to a variety of clients, from those looking to get in shape to those working to get back to daily activities.
“We offer any type of personal-training experience appropriate to our clients’ needs,” Webb said. “Exercise should be safe, but there are ways to get hurt. … A trainer can help you do it safely.”
Webb, an orthopedic exercise specialist, works primarily with individuals to improve muscular strength, mobility, range of motion, posture and balance as well as to help strengthen core muscles, she said.
Webb said although she is not a physical therapist, many of her clients will come to her after they have finished therapy to continue getting stronger and staying active.
Mariana Cartwright, who began working with Webb in March, said when she moved to Georgetown she began looking for somebody trained in physiotherapy who worked outside of a gym setting.
“It was great that I could find somebody so close,” Cartwright said. “I have a very bad back. … Strength training with the right kind of instruction is the only thing that keeps me moving without major surgery.”
She said Clara Bella is offering an essential service to area residents.
For Webb, helping clients stay active and healthy is the most rewarding part of her job, she said.
“It’s always encouraging when it’s working for them,” Webb said.
