The Woodlands Volunteer Guide

The Woodlands has many charities and nonprofits that need volunteers throughout the year. There are volunteer opportunities available for any level of time commitment. Here is a list of some local charities that are accepting volunteers.

Assistance League of Montgomery County provides new clothing for children who are starting their first day of school, puts on puppet shows in area schools to educate students on what household items are poisonous and provides dolls for abused children to aid in their communication with their counselors. Assistance League of Montgomery County trains volunteers to assist in its thrift store in downtown Conroe.

Breast Cancer Charities of America Breast Cancer Charities of America[/caption]

Breast Cancer Charities of America, which puts on the annual Wine, Women and Shoes event, offers education outreach and programs including Feeling Beautiful Again, which focuses on empowering female cancer survivors to accept their bodies. The organization looks for volunteers to assist with event planning, administration duties and stuffing Fabulous Swag Bags and Feeling Beautiful Again bags, which include scarves, lotions and nail polish.

CASA, or Court-Appointed Special Advocates, is Montgomery County’s only court-appointed organization advocating for abused and neglected children. Advocates ensure children are helped through legal and social services and do not languish in inappropriate group or foster homes. Advocates stay with each case until the child is placed in a safe, permanent home. CASA is seeking volunteers to become a child advocate, to offer event planning and to provide office assistance.

412 W. Phillips St., Ste. 107, Conroe

Children’s Safe Harbor provides services to sexually and physically abused children in Montgomery County and surrounding areas. Volunteers age 18 and older are needed for the family services team, which works one-on-one with children and families, and for the multidisciplinary support team, which assists the professionals working each case. Volunteers undergo an orientation. While the age requirement is 18 and older for most volunteer activities, younger children are invited to participate in other events, such as food and snack drives.

The Education for Tomorrow Alliance hosts science and technology expositions and offers youths career preparation. The programs give volunteers the opportunity to participate in youth outreach programs. The Future Focus Program allows junior high students to engage in interactive workshops, and the Student Internship Program helps rising seniors explore their career options.

The volunteers at Friends of Texas Wildlife nurse back to health orphaned and injured wildlife. The organization invites individuals with no special training to volunteer, including 16- and 17-year-old children if they are accompanied by a parent. Friends of Texas Wildlife host training classes four to five times a year.

P.O. Box 130786, Magnolia

To date, Habitat for Humanity Montgomery County, which brings together volunteers and community organizations to build and renovate simple, affordable homes for families in need, has built 101 homes in the county. Volunteers are needed for family selection committees, family support groups, church relations, Habitat’s ReStore resale shop and events.

Interfaith of The Woodlands provides a variety of assistance services to residents of The Woodlands area, including bill pay assistance, food donations, clothing vouchers, school supplies, senior services and employment services. Volunteers are needed for food drives, food pantry assistance, the Hand Me Up Shop resale store, grocery delivery, transportation programs and special events.

Volunteers—from college students to retirees—are needed at The Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Hospital for the many programs that support the needs of the hospital. Hospital volunteer opportunities include clinical and nonclinical roles, the gift shop and golf cart driving for transporting guests to and from the parking lot.

The Montgomery County Food Bank The Montgomery County Food Bank[/caption]

The Montgomery County Food Bank distributes more than 7 million pounds of food annually to more than 32,000 low-income children, adults and seniors living in Montgomery County. MCFB is in need of volunteers to inspect, sort and box food, help at food fairs or special events, and donate talents and professional services. MCFB offers volunteer opportunities for groups, families or individuals ages 7 and older who are willing to give one to two hours of their time and provide 24 hours notice in advance to inspect, sort and box food, and assist at food fairs and events.

1 Food For Life Way, Conroe

The Montgomery County Women’s Center needs volunteers year-round to help in the administrative offices in Conroe and The Woodlands. Opportunities include working in the Something Special retail shop, providing child care so women can attend counseling, providing shelter assistance, working the hotline, and providing personal or legal accompaniment. Volunteers must fill out an application online, and training is required for anyone working with clients or their children.

Working to keep children in school, Montgomery County Youth Services provides crisis counseling, shelter programs and prevention services to Montgomery County youths. MCYS is seeking volunteers for clerical and administrative duties as well as special events. Additionally, volunteers are needed to entertain and cook for children at the youth shelters.

Ste. 130, The Woodlands

Panther Creek Inspiration Ranch uses equine-assisted therapy in helping individuals suffering from physical, mental and emotional challenges. PCI Ranch is seeking volunteers age 15 years and older to work as sidewalkers, offer horse preparation, help with special projects at the organization’s farm, perform administration and data entry, and provide assistance with special events and community projects.

The South Montgomery County YMCA is seeking volunteers to be sports coaches and volunteer for special events, such as the YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day and Run Through the Woods. All volunteers undergo a background check, and children age 13 and over as well as adults are needed.

The Woodlands

The South Montgomery County Friends of the Library offers story times and different events for kids of all ages. For adults, free services include craft events as well as author visits. The Friends of The Library Group offers volunteer opportunities for adults and teens. Teens must attend orientation and volunteer to help with teen programming and assist at the circulation and reference desk.

8125 Ashlane Way, The Woodlands

The activity center at The Special Angels of The Woodlands offers those with mental and physical disabilities a chance to participate in self-esteem and social competence activities. Volunteers are needed to load and unload buses, distribute craft materials and assist during field trips. The organization welcomes volunteers for craft-making, singing and fundraising.

Young Life Young Life[/caption]

The nonprofit organization Young Life is an outreach ministry for high school students. The organization seeks volunteers to build relationships with high school kids. Young Life also needs volunteers to assist on its adult board, which organizes fundraising events, including a golf tournament. In The Woodlands, Young Life is active at College Park, Oak Ridge and The Woodlands high schools.
