Parents expressed their concerns regarding draft attendance zones for new schools opening in fall 2016 during the Nov. 9 Frisco ISD board of trustees meeting. On Oct. 19, the district released the proposed attendance zones for new schools opening in fall 2016 as well as for existing campuses Ashley, Comstock, Curtsinger and Smith elementary schools to alleviate overcrowding. New schools opening in Frisco are Lebanon Trail High School, Nelson Middle School, Miller and Vaughn elementary schools. The district gives parents and community members an opportunity every year to provide public input about anything regarding the draft zones. Board President Anna McCausland said she understands that rezoning can be a trying time for affected students and their families. “All of the members on this board are parents too and none of us take this responsibility lightly,” McCausland said. “Rezoning is probably our least favorite thing to do but unfortunately in Frisco ISD we’re tasked with it every year [because of rapid growth].” Some of the concerns parents brought before the board dealt with separating neighborhoods, separating families and traffic safety concerns. There were several dozen parents from the Cascades and Aspendale neighborhoods in McKinney present at the meeting who presented petitions opposing rezoning that would affect their neighborhoods. The parents also presented their proposals to the board. The district draft proposals that many parents are opposed to are moving a number of students to Ashley Elementary School to relieve Comstock Elementary. Many parents also opposed the rezoning of new school Nelson Middle School, which would relieve Maus, Roach and Scoggins middle schools. This would affect neighborhoods in Cascades and Liberty Crossing. The district will consider the petitions and proposals but it will not bring forward any adjusted map until the next board meeting on Dec. 14 when trustees will vote on zoning.
