The city of Frisco will not immediately spray for another mosquito pool that has tested positive for West Nile virus in the Frisco Lakes Division, according to city news release.
According to the news release, windy and rainy conditions make for immediate treatment ineffective. However the same inclement weather can also help reduce any health risk.
“We hoped to spray over the weekend, but the weather isn’t cooperating,” Environmental Health Supervisor Julie Stallcup said in the release. “We’re also hopeful the wet weather will reduce the mosquito population. Once we get past the wet forecast, we plan to retest mosquito pools in the subdivision. That will help us determine whether treatment is still warranted before moving forward with any spraying.”
This brings the total number of pools to test positive for the virus this season to ten.
No human cases have been confirmed.
Mosquito season is expected to go through mid-November, according to health experts and entomologists. Homeowners are advised to drain all standing water following the recent rains and to take any precautions to reduce risk.
The Texas Department of State Health Services urges residents to practice the “Four D’s”:
- Drain all standing water
- Dress in light-colored clothing and wear long sleeves when outdoors
- DEET—use mosquito repellents that contain DEET
- Dusk or dawn—avoid activity during the hours when mosquitoes are most active
