Residents are invited to tour several North Austin gardens, including the new Adelphi Acre Community Garden, for the second North by North Austin Garden and Artisan Tour on May 2.

Two years ago residents in North Austin launched the garden tour with goals of beautifying local schools and raising awareness of the area as a destination.

Funds raised from the first event—about $4,900—went toward beautification efforts at several North Austin schools, such as creating a rain garden at Dobie Middle School and cleaning up Wooldridge Elementary School.

This year, Mary Rudig—editor of the Love North Austin blog and one of the tour organizers—said money will help create a mural at McBee Elementary School and complete beautification efforts at Walnut Creek Metropolitan Park.

The self-guided tour takes place between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. and includes tours of 17 private gardens, three community gardens—Adelphi Acre, North Austin YMCA garden and the Gus Garcia Recreation Center—as well as one school garden.

New this year is the addition of artists who will sell their artwork, such as photography and other fine art, during the tour.

"We are not charging artists a collector's fee," Rudig said. "We feel like there's not a lot of support for artists. Proceeds [from sales] go directly to the artists."

Earphoria, a hostel for musicians in the North Loop neighborhood, will also host events, such as live music, a brunch and garden demonstrations. Events at Earphoria are from 11 a.m.-8 p.m.

The tour is a $10 suggested donation, and attendees may purchase tickets online. More information is also available on the Love North Austin blog at https://www.lovenorthaustin.com/nxna-garden-tour.html.
