Williamson County will recognize the month of April as April Pools Day to raise drowning awareness and promote swimming safety. Commissioners Court passed a proclamation during its regular scheduled meeting March 31. "The No. 1 rule is never leave a child unattended around pools, spas, bathtubs or any body of water," said Kenny Schnell, director of Williamson County Emergency Medical Services. Schnell spoke on behalf of the Child Fatality Review Team for Williamson County. According to the proclamation, drowning is the the leading cause of injury and death for children ages 1 to 4, and a nonfatal drowning can cause long-term disabilities, including loss of basic functioning. "Unfortunately for 2014 we had four near drownings and four drownings in Williamson County," Schnell said. "Of the drowning deaths, three were children and one was an adult." The review team found that most drownings occur near the end of the school year when people have pool parties, and Schnell offered tips for prevention such as wearing a whistle and remembering that a child might have forgotten how to swim during the winter. Schnell said the most important thing people can do is pay attention. "Always have someone present," he said. "Drownings occur when there is a short lapse in adult supervision."
