Businesses can get ready to battle it out in a new competition—Frisco's first corporate challenge is taking place June 5. The Leadership Frisco Class XVIII, in partnership with the Frisco Chamber of Commerce, has chosen to organize the Frisco 5 Star Challenge as its class project. Businesses from Frisco and surrounding cities can participate in the nearly all-day team-building event that pits company against company. Thirty-six teams of 10 will be fielded with five men and five women on each team. The event starts with registration at 9 a.m., has a morning game session, breaks for lunch, has an afternoon session and will wrap up with awards by 5 p.m. Teams can find registration information online at www.friscochamber.com. Event coordinators Allison Reddoch and Andrew Hicks of Leadership Frisco said they expect to have no problem filling the 36 team slots. "We have had businesses as far away as Dallas contact us," Hicks said. "This is a way to get them involved in Frisco. [The challenge is open to] any company that does business in Frisco or wants to do business in Frisco." Reddoch said she promises the challenge, reminiscent of a field day in grade school, will be "anything but formal." The day of team events, ranging from a potato sack race to tug-of-war, will get businesses out of their element and offer a team-building experience and networking opportunities along with its health and wellness benefits from the physical activity. The entry fee is $1,250 per team, but Reddoch and Hicks said small businesses that might not have the manpower or the funds for a full team can join together and split the cost. "We want to be careful not to exclude small businesses," Reddoch said. A portion of the proceeds will go to charity, and a portion will go back to the chamber. The chamber is currently a four-star rated chamber and is working to get a five-star rating. One requirement of being a five-star chamber is having a revenue source in addition to member dues. The Frisco 5 Star Challenge is an attempt to make that goal. Hicks said a corporate challenge had been talked about in the past but has never come to fruition before now. "The chamber of commerce is interested in taking this over and making it an annual event," Reddoch said. The goal with the inaugural Frisco 5 Star Challenge is to have a solid starting year and grow the event in subsequent years, Hicks said. "We didn't want to plan too big this first year—we want everything to be organized," Reddoch said. Spectators are able to attend the event free of charge.
