In the midst of celebrating 175 years, Southwestern University received a $5.1 million gift.
Southwestern University announced a $5.1 million endowment Feb. 5 from Margaret S. Odiorne, which will be used to establish a scholarship that benefits students from the Texas Hill Country.
Margaret made the donation in honor of her late husband, Truman J Odiorne, a graduate of SU who attended the university through an academic scholarship.
Truman grew up in Johnson City and graduated in 1966 as a chemistry major. He continued his education at Rice University where he received his graduate degree in physical chemistry and conducted early research on lasers.
The Odiorne Scholarship will be available in 2016, and students must meet eligibility requirements, including living in the Hill Country for at least one year prior to admission to SU.
The Hill Country includes Bandera, Bexar,Blanco,Burnet,Gillespie,Kendall, Kerr,Medina,Travis and Williamson counties.
