City Council directed city staff at its Dec. 9 meeting to draft changes to an ordinance governing taxicabs, buses and other vehicles for hire operating in the city.

The ordinance requires such vehicles to maintain a license to operate within the city; however, council could consider changes that would allow vehicles licensed in other cities to operate within the city of Georgetown as well.

The ordinance was last amended in August 2001 and is administered by the police department, Assistant City Attorney Michelle Villarreal said.

Villarreal said the ordinance language could be similar to ordinances in the city of Austin or Sugar Land.
