Toyota Stadium has been chosen as one of 13 host sites for the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup soccer tournament.
The stadium will host the opening game of the tournament July 7, which continues through July 26 throughout the U.S. The U.S. Men's National Team will play an opponent in Frisco as part of a doubleheader that features four national teams in The Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football organization.
The complete groups and schedule will be announced sometime in 2015. Tickets for the Frisco game will be available sometime in the spring.
"We are thrilled to play our opening game of the CONCACAF Gold Cup in Frisco," said U.S. Men's National Team head coach Jurgen Klinsmann in a news release. "Winning the tournament is the No. 1 priority for the senior National Team in 2015, so it's important that we get started on the right foot. It's a great stadium and there's a tremendous tradition for soccer in the area, so we're hoping to get huge support from all our fans."
The Gold Cup is the official national team championship of the region, which includes the top 12 national teams.
The 2015 tournament will play the champion of the 2013 Gold Cup (United States) in a playoff for a berth in the 2017 Confederations Cup, a prelude to the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. If the U.S. wins the 2015 tournament, the team automatically qualifies for the 2017 Confederations Cup.
