Del Frisco's Restaurant Group will hold its first 5K event on Nov. 8 in Southlake to benefit Operation Once in a Lifetime, a nonprofit organization created by a soldier to help other soldiers.

Southlake Mayor John Terrell, city dignitaries, local members of the armed forces and representatives of Operation Once in a Lifetime attended a sign-up rally on Oct. 23.

During the rally, Patrick Sowers, founder of the nonprofit, said the organization is different than most because it's designed to help every soldier rather than just those who are wounded.

"We are often looked at as the Make-A-Wish of the military," he said. "But we are more than that because we help all veterans, doesn't matter when or where they served because all of them deserve support."

All of the proceeds from the walk will go directly to the nonprofit to help soldiers and their families.

Sherry Joesph, director of sales for Del Frisco's, said the company chose to do the 5K because they wanted to find a way to be more visible in the community while still donating to charity.

"We were looking to do something to where all five of our restaurants could participate," she said. "We work at night, so sometimes it's hard to find the perfect event. Southlake is such a charitable community and we are humbled that you are going to be with us and allow us to to do this in your city. It's important to our team that we do this."
