AMD's board of directors appointed Lisa Su as president and chief executive officer and member of the board of directors Oct. 8 to succeed CEO Rory Read, who stepped down and will serve in an advisory role until the end of 2014.

Su, who joined the company in 2012 and most recently served as chief operating officer, is AMD's first female CEO, according to the company. AMD is based in California but operates its Lone Star campus at 7171 Southwest Pkwy. in Southwest Austin.

"I am deeply honored to have this opportunity to lead AMD during this important time of transformation," Su said in a news release. "Our world-class technology assets combined with the incredible talent and passion of the AMD team provide us with a unique opportunity to shape the future of computing."

Before coming to AMD, Su served as senior vice president and general manager, Networking and Multimedia at Freescale Semiconductor, Inc. and before that spent several years at IBM in various leadership roles. According to AMD, she has bachelor's, master's and doctorate degrees in electrical engineering from MIT.
