Council on June 26 approved $31 million worth of home buyouts in the Onion Creek area in Southeast Austin where a flood in October damaged more than 100 homes.

Many community members came out to express support and gratitude for the buyouts, which benefit approximately 140 homes.

"Any of us who have had water pour into our home or seen what that can do to others feel compassion for our fellow citizens just like every one of you do on the dais," resident Stewart Hirsch told council. "Passing this resolution is the first step to show that we really care."

However, residents also voiced disapproval for council agreeing to hire a consultant group at a cost of up to $12 million.

"I don't believe it's fair to hire a contractor for $12 million. If we're claiming that there is not enough money for this buyout, $12 million can go straight to our neighbors," resident Isabel Rios told council. "The watershed department and real estate department should be able to conduct these buyouts."

Councilman Mike Martinez said that the consultation agency did not think its cost would come close to $12 million but that the number was set at that point to address any unforeseen circumstances.
