Constructors broke ground on a new Hutto baseball field on May 5 that will be tailor-made for children with physical and mental disabilities.
The field will be located at the Bridge Community Church site on County Road 138. The church gifted a 50-year lease for the field.
The Keep Calm and Chive on Ability Field will be funded entirely by charitable donations, said John Lorek, executive director of Central Texas Ability Sports.
A partnership between the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation and Ability Sports, along with a $200,000 donation from Chive Charities made the project possible.
Initially, Lorek called on Chive Charities to donate some shirts to Ability Sports. Chive then looked into the potential "ability field" project and decided to make the major donation.
"I asked them for T-shirts, now we've got a baseball field," Lorek said. "It's amazing."
The KCCO Ability Field will be the first of its kind in rural America, Lorek said.
The field is designed to be a safe place for kids with physical and mental disabilities to play team sports and build character, according to a news release.
Features unique to the field include thick padding beneath AstroTurf, which helps kids with walkers and wheelchairs to move around, Lorek said. Though it will be shaped like a baseball diamond, it will be used for a variety of sporting activities.
The field is scheduled to open in early August 2014. Lorek said he has already asked the Austin Aztex minor league soccer team to put on an adaptive soccer clinic and he has planned a football clinic.
"Team sports will provide opportunities for [the disabled children] to grow physically, socially and emotionally and allow them to build social skills through peer interaction," according to a news release.
The Texas Rangers Foundation, Ronald McDonald House, sMiles 4 Sammy and Baylor Scott & White Health also donated money.
