Local health care entities are hosting free events in February for American Heart Month to promote heart health.

The monthlong campaign is intended to promote awareness that heart disease is the No. 1 killer in the United States, as cardiovascular disease causes one in four deaths in the nation, according to the American Heart Association. This year marks the 50th anniversary of American Heart Month, a national event started by former President Lyndon B. Johnson, according to the AHA.

Local organizations such as Baylor Scott & White, Seton Healthcare and St. David's HealthCare are hosting events and services to promote heart disease awareness throughout the month in Austin, Georgetown and Round Rock.

Charlotte's Fiesta Flowers, located at 4404 Burnet Road, is including information about heart screenings offered at Heart Hospital of Austin with each floral purchase during February. The HeartSaverCT screenings are painless and show doctors detailed images of the heart to help determine calcified blockages in the arteries, according to the hospital. HHA offers screenings without a physician referral for individuals with certain risk factors. For more information about eligibility for screenings, visit the website or call 512-407-7283.

Seton is offering Heart Healthy CT scans for $99 at the following locations: Seton Northwest Hospital, Seton Medical Center Austin, Seton Medical Center Hays and Seton Medical Center Williamson.
