The Project Connect planning team is seeking public input to help staff narrow its focus of 10 subcorridors to one of where urban rail could go from downtown in the Central Corridor.
The Central Corridor is roughly bounded by RM 2222, MoPac, Oltorf Street and Springdale Road. It is part of the overarching Project Connect regional transit plan that involves a partnership among the city of Austin, Capital Metro and regional group Lone Star Rail District.
Leading the planning efforts is the Central Corridor Advisory Group that is advising Mayor Lee Leffingwell on the urban rail initiative. Project Connect staff will recommend a priority subcorridor at the Nov. 15 CCAG meeting and will use feedback from the public in its consideration.
The CCAG will make its recommendation of a priority subcorridor Dec. 6. The Capital Metro board of directors will approve the recommendation Dec. 11, and City Council will approve it Dec. 12.
During the public workshops, participants will have a chance to go to different stations set up to analyze each of the 10 subcorridors and review data.
"That will really help us fully understand what they would like to see the staff recommend," said John Julitz, communications specialist for Capital Metro.
Participants may also rank which criteria—such as population and employment density, congestion, economic development and ridership potential—they find the most important to use when determining a priority subcorridor.
