Leander will hold a special election Nov. 5 to replace outgoing Councilwoman Michell Cantwell.
City Council approved the election during its Sept. 5 meeting with one caveat. Leander residents within Travis County's boundaries will need to vote at a Williamson County-approved voting center to take part in the city election.
"Travis County does not have to hold this election for us, and they have declined," City Manager Kent Cagle told council. "Now for Williamson County voters, everything will be normal."
Leander voters within Travis County—on the city's west side, mostly the Crystal Falls subdivision—can still vote on county-specific issues at Travis County-sanctioned polling locations. But they would also have to vote at a Williamson County voting center to take part in the Leander election, Cagle said.
City council candidates are eligible to apply immediately and can submit applications, which are available at Leander City Hall, until 5 p.m. Sept. 23. Early voting begins Oct. 21 at Pat Bryson Municipal Hall, 201 N. Brushy St., and will run through Nov. 1.
On election day Nov. 5, there will be six voting locations throughout Leander.
Cantwell, who has served on council the past 10 years, resigned Aug. 27 in order to run for Williamson County treasurer. She will hold her seat until she is replaced, in accordance with state and city laws.
