Health food for dogs keeps owners happy

Tammy Malone's passion for good animal nutrition started in 2007 when two cats she owned died after they ate food that was later recalled.

Three years later, she left corporate America and started Bark Avenue in Colleyville with her husband, John Doak.

"It's a health food store for dogs and cats," she said.

Business at the store, which is packed to overflowing with dog and cat food and toys has continued to grow every year despite the recession. The couple is considering a move to a larger location this year.

The biggest change since the beginning: the growth in popularity of raw, natural pet foods, often sold frozen. Malone said they started with one freezer and now fill three plus a chest freezer and the top of a refrigerator with brands such as Stella & Chewy's.

As for quality, they research foods and have seven testers at home.
