Meetings

The Woodlands Township board of directors meets twice a month, at 9 a.m. on the third Thursday of the month and on 6 p.m. on the fourth Wednesday of the month at the board chambers, located at 2801 Technology Forest Blvd.

Terms and compensation

Township board members serve two-year terms and are not compensated for meetings.

Big decisions made in 2012

• No incorporation vote in 2014 — The Woodlands Township made a significant decision in 2012 by opting not to hold a vote on incorporation in 2014. After a lengthy governance study process which included surveys of residents and local organizations, in-depth financial analysis and public forums, it was determined the property tax increase for the residents was more significant than the benefits provided by becoming a city. However, The Woodlands has until 2057 to incorporate and could hold a vote in the future.
• Sports fields needs addressed — In 2012, the board of directors added lights to fields at Creekwood and Harper's Landing and installed artificial turf on six fields at Bear Branch and Alden Bridge sports parks. The board also chose a 25-acre site along the north end of Gosling Road which could provide four or five multipurpose fields at a cost of $3.5 million–$4.5 million. The township is awaiting conveyance of the land from The Woodlands Development Company before construction can begin.

Top issues for 2013

• Transportation needs on the horizon — With the community continuing to grow, traffic congestion and mobility concerns grow with it. Montgomery County voters failed to pass a $200 million bond referendum November 2011 which would have provided $50 million to Precinct 3 and could have repaved Grogan's Mill Road and helped other projects. The expansion of Woodlands Parkway should be completed in 2013, but flyovers of Research Forest Drive and Hwy. 242 at I-45 remain a concern. Since the township is not a city, it has no ownership of the roads within its boundaries. However, the creation of a Transportation Ad Hoc Committee and the possibility of future incorporation means the township could be more involved in transportation projects over the next 12 months.
• Growth in Creekside Park — The Woodlands may be reaching buildout, but there remains plenty of room for growth in The Village of Creekside Park. Three new parks and a pool will be built in 2013 within the village and economic development will continue along Kuykendahl Road as the community fills out.
