The MOOYAH burger joint on Colleyville Boulevard was packed Tuesday afternoon, but the patrons munching on sweet potato fries and slurping down sodas were there for more than fast food.
Mayor David Kelly sat amid tables of city staffers and other elected officials, and a few seats away, Colleyville Chamber of Commerce Chairwoman Rebecca Barksdale chatted with a mix of members, ambassadors and staff.
Just outside the door, Colleyville Economic Development Director Marty Wieder welcomed patrons to the city's first cash mob.
"I read about some other town where they would show up in an organized fashion to support a business," Kelly said between bites of burger, "so I thought it would be good in Colleyville. Marty took the idea and ran with it."
A "cash mob" is a riff on the term "flash mob," which was coined several years ago to describe a group of people who show up to a public space and perform a dance or other activity before simply dispersing, to the surprise and often delight of passers-by. There was no dancing, singing or pillow fighting Tuesday, though, just food and camaraderie.
"We want to show [these businesses] our appreciation, we want them to know that we're glad they're here, that we support them," Wieder said, "and we want to give them an influx of cash, some attention, a boost so they walk away saying, 'I'm so glad I'm here in Colleyville.'"
After a successful kickoff Tuesday, in which a steady stream of who's who in Colleyville leadership kept Mooyah workers busy for a couple of hours, leaders say they have big hopes for the future.
"I think it's a wonderful expression of the spirit of community in Colleyville," Barksdale said. "I'm excited to see that so many people came out, and I think it's one of those things that will just build each time."
A coalition between the city and its Colleyville Close Buy program, the chamber, and small business advising group SCORE, the mob expects to meet once a month at a Colleyville restaurant or retailer. The event will remain (mostly) secret to add to the fun, but will be posted by the Chamber monthly to allow other residents to participate.
