Shopping centers The Domain, Barton Creek Square and Lakeline Mall are extending their shopping hours and offering other promotions to for the the state's sales tax holiday taking place Aug. 17–19.

"We definitely anticipate it will be a busy time for all the centers and the shoppers," said Kristen Yen, director of marketing at Barton Creek Square.

This weekend, shoppers may purchase clothing, shoes, backpacks and school supplies and not pay sales tax on items priced less than $100. For each $100 spent, a customer could save $8.

Texas was one of the first states to have a sales tax holiday weekend, which began1999, said RJ DeSilva, spokesman for the state comptroller's office. He said the primary driver for the tax holiday is to give shoppers a chance to save money. DeSilva said lawmakers opted to pair the sales tax holiday weekend with back-to-school sales to optimize savings for shoppers.

He said the state is anticipating that shoppers this year will save about $64.8 million in state and local sales tax.

"The benefits to consumers outweigh [not collecting sales tax]," he said.

On both Friday and Saturday, the first 200 shoppers at Barton Creek Square and the first 100 shoppers Lakeline Mall who sign up for an email newsletter or mobile shopper club for mall owner Simon Property Group Inc. receive complimentary goody bags with gifts from the mall and retailers, Yen said. The mobile shopper program sends text messages to shoppers with information about specials and events.
