Mark M. Shelton has won the state Senate District 10 Republican candidacy with more than 80 percent of the vote over Derek Cooper.

Of the 34,955 ballots cast, Shelton earned 80.81 percent of the vote or 28,246 votes over challenger Cooper's 19.19 percent of the vote with 6,709 supporters, according to unofficial results from the Tarrant County Elections Administration.

The winner of the Republican primary will challenge incumbent state Sen. Wendy Davis, D-Fort Worth.

Davis ran unopposed and earned 17,227 votes, according to unofficial tallies.

In a statement, Davis said her support for public education is one of the issues that will seperate her from her opponent.

"While my opponent will focus on catering to a small group of partisans, I instead will continue talking with all voters in the district about how Texas can do better by investing in our children's education and by focusing on job retention and creation," Davis said.
