Although faced with six challengers, more than any other incumbent in the Austin City Council race, incumbent Bill Spelman held onto his seat with 55 percent of the vote, according to unofficial results.
Spelman is a professor at the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs at The University of Texas, making him the only current council member who does not receive a salary from the City of Austin. Spelman served on City Council from 1997–2000. He was elected again in 2009.
Spelman's top two challengers were Dom Chavez, senior director for external relations at the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, and Tina Cannon, entrepreneur-in-residence at Texas State University and chief operating officer of LOCALoyalty Magazine. Chavez received 20 percent of the vote and Cannon 11 percent.
The other candidates running for Place 5 were David Conley, John Duffy, Bo Prudente and John Rubine.
