Georgetown ISD has put a community Q&A on its website to answer questions regarding a recent proposal from Lone Star Circle of Care to provide school campuses with nurse practitioners and licensed clinical social workers.

The proposal was brought to the district by LSCC, a nonprofit community health provider.

According to a statement issued by LSCC, "the proposed project with Georgetown ISD would increase timely and convenient access to high quality primary health care services for the students of GISD and their families. In addition to the innovative, coordinated and patient-centered care the proposal would offer the children and families of this community, it would also create a substantial savings for the school district with no increase in costs for parents or taxpayers"

The statement also said parents would still be able to select a health care provider for their child and make decisions for their child's care.

"Lone Star Circle of Care sees this proposal as a way to improve the health of our community through collaboration, innovation and forward-thinking in an era of unprecedented funding cuts to education and a rapidly changing health care environment," the statement said.

School officials have said they are studying the proposal and possible changes and additions to the original proposal.

The proposal presented to the superintendent would "staff nurse practitioners and licensed clinical social workers on campuses and could save the district more than $800,000 per year," according to a news release from the district.

During the April 16 board of trustees meeting, the board approved renewing contracts for all registered nurses in the district for the 2012–13 school year. The school district currently employs 15 registered nurses and one LVN, who are overseen by a registered nurse, GISD spokesman Brad Domitrovich said.

The district will honor those contracts, he said.

The proposal will likely be discussed at the board of trustees May 21 meeting.

Domitrovich said before any changes to the school's health care system are made, the school district must host a public forum.
