San Gabriel Park was one of nine parks in Texas designated a Lone Star Legacy Park by the Texas Recreation and Parks Society in March.
This is the first time the designation has been given. Parks were chosen for their iconic status in their communities and prominence in the state, according to a news release from the City of Georgetown. Each park selected is at least 50 years old.
"These are parks that have helped shaped the region you live in," said Robin Kunkel, Region 5 director for TRAPS, at the City Council's March 13 meeting.
According to the release, each park has unique natural or constructed features and are associated with historical or community events.
In Georgetown, San Gabriel Park was once the site for Tonkawa Indian encampments and was located along the Chisholm Trail cattle drive route, according to the city.
The park is also home to several community events, including Chisholm Trail Days, Sertoma's Fourth of July celebrations, Festival of the Arts concerts and the Williamson County Sheriff's Posse Rodeo.
Other parks receiving the designation include Zilker Park in Austin, the Fort Worth Botanic Garden, Heritage Park in Grapevine, Landa Park in New Braunfels, Haggard Park in Plano, Civic League Park in San Angelo, San Pedro Springs Park in San Antonio and Walnut Springs Park in Seguin.
