New Braunfels Utilities Board of Trustees appointed a rate advisory committee on April 28 to study and advise on any rate changes prior to proposing new rates to New Braunfels City Council due in April 2023.
In October 2020 City Council approved a three-year rate plan for NBU that went into effect in November 2020, according to a release from NBU.
The 18-member rate advisory committee is tasked to weigh the cost of providing service with maintaining fair and equitable rates, according to the release. Freese and Nichols Inc. will serve as the lead consulting agency for a water and wastewater cost of service study and New Gen Strategies and Solutions will provide an electric cost-of-service study. Those studies will help inform the rate advisory committee.
“The process for setting utility rates needs to be transparent and open to all,” said NBU CEO Ian Taylor in the statement. “We have an opportunity through this process to make sure our community-owned utilities are affordable while ensuring the safety and resiliency of our water supply, protecting the quality of our rivers and streams and maintaining best in class electric reliability.”
