Sophienburg Museum to host Bürger Ball fundraiser in New Braunfels

On Aug. 27, the Sophienburg Museum will host its first Bürger Ball modeled after a traditional celebration featuring dancing and live music.

Bürger Balls began in the early 1900s and were social events at which residents gathered to dance, eat and drink, according to Tara Kohlenberg, executive director of the museum.

Attendees can enjoy live music featuring Gary P. Nunn, food and dancing from 8-11 p.m. at The Chandelier of Gruene, 1924 Bretzke Lane, New Braunfels. Tickets are $75 per person.

All proceeds from the event will benefit the Sophienburg Museum.

“Our board has been searching for a special type of fundraiser for the museum to help recoup revenue lost from the cancellation of in-person events like Wurstfest and Weihnachtsmarkt last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the Bürger Ball seemed a perfect fit,” wrote Kohlenberg in a press release.

Museum board and staff members had planned several events for the city’s 175th anniversary, including a Bürger Ball, but all in-person events were cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Tickets can be purchased online ahead of the event.
