City staff is scheduled to update McKinney City Council members on proposed improvements along the State Highway 5 corridor at an upcoming work session in July.
The overview
Plans are underway to reconstruct and widen SH 5 as a divided four-lane road between McMakin Street and Power House Street, according to a city document. Design is underway, and the Texas Department of Transportation is expected to start construction in late 2027 or early 2028.
As part of that project, the city is contributing funding for additional enhancements along the corridor, such as median-mounted roadway lighting and turn lanes. The city is also planning an enhanced at-grade crossing between East Virginia Street and East Louisiana Street.
