Work will soon be underway to add a new dog park and play zone at McKinney’s Towne Lake Park near US 75.

Council members approved two contracts Aug. 18 for construction and materials testing services related to new construction at the park. The project will include construction of a new dog park, two parking lots, restrooms, two sand volleyball courts and more, according to a city document.
The new features will be located between the McKinney Senior Recreation Center and Grady Littlejohn Sports Complex. They are part of a multi-year effort to make improvements at Towne Lake Park. Some new features like the Light Walk at Towne Lake and improvements at the Recreation Center at Towne Lake have already been completed and opened to the public.
The cost
Council members approved up to $8.05 million, including contingency amounts, for the two contracts:
Construction of the dog park is expected to cost $2.1 million and construction of the play zone is expected to cost $5.5 million, Parks and Recreation Director Amy Kinkade said. The project will be funded by parkland dedication fees, bond funds and the McKinney Community Development Corporation, according to city documents. Kinkade reviewed plans and cost estimates for the project during the Aug. 18 council meeting.
A closer look
The play zone area will be located next to the dog park, according to a staff presentation. Plans include an event area with a stage and seating, a restroom building, the sand volleyball courts and more, Kinkade said.
The dog park will include a splash pad and agility course for dogs as well as trails that connect to the McKinney Senior Recreation Center and pavilion, Kinkade said.
“This has been a high priority to make sure to have that connection to the senior rec center from Towne Lake,” she said.
