The McKinney Police Department’s headquarters and gun range will receive renovations and improvements in the coming year.
What happened?
McKinney City Council members passed two resolutions related to renovations at the city’s Public Safety Building and the police department’s gun range during a May 19 meeting. The resolutions authorize City Manager Paul Grimes to execute guaranteed maximum prices with Crossland Construction Company for two projects:
- $5.48 million for Phase 6 renovations to the Public Safety Building
- $1.12 million for improvements to the police department’s gun range
Facilities Construction Manager Patricia Jackson said Crossland was selected through a request for qualifications process several months ago. Renovations to the Public Safety Building will be focused on the southern part of the first floor, she said.
That space was primarily used by the McKinney Fire Department, which moved to a new facility earlier this year.
“Now we’re renovating it for the expansion and needs of the [McKinney Police Department],” Jackson said.
With approval, Crossland will be notified to begin construction, according to a city document. Final completion is expected March 11, 2027, according to a proposal attached to the agenda.

The $1.12 million gun range improvements will pay for a 2,600-square-foot building that includes storage space and restrooms. McKinney police have a training facility at a separate location on Interchange Way, but they do not have a building with restrooms, Jackson said.
“Many of you may not be aware that for the longest time period, we have had portajohns at the gun range,” she said. “For all the training that police and others do at the gun range, we have found the need to have a storage and restroom building.”
Final completion for the project is expected May 28, 2027, according to a proposal.
