12 candidates will appear on May 1 ballot for McKinney City Council

Two incumbent candidates and 10 newcomers have filed for positions on McKinney City Council.

Three mayoral candidates have emerged after the filing period for City Council positions closed at 5 p.m. Feb. 12. Mayor George Fuller will run for re-election and will face challengers Thomas Meredith and Jimmy Stewart.

The seat for District 1 has the most candidates to choose from, with five people in total filing for that position. This seat was vacated after La’Shadion Shemwell was recalled by McKinney voters in the November election. Angela Richardson-Woods is currently in this position in an interim capacity after she was appointed by council in December. She said she would not run for the position in the May election.

Running for the District 1 seat are Justin Beller, Trevino Cristoval, Johnny Moore, Stanley Penn, and Thomas Tolan.

Following District 3 Council Member Scott Elliott’s announcement that he would not seek re-election in May, Gere’ Feltus and Vicente Torres have filed for the position.

The At-Large Position 1 seat also has two candidates running. Council Member Charlie Philips is running for re-election and will face challenger Brian Magnuson.

April 1 is the last day to register for voting in the general election, which will take place May 1. Early voting will begin April 19 and close April 27.
