More than 12 years ago, Noah Polk and Michael Freid opened their first location of East Side Pies on Rosewood Avenue in East Austin, making dough from a starter Freid created now 28 years ago.

Polk said their dough is one of the many ways their pizza joint stands apart from the rest.

“The starter goes into every batch of dough,” he said. “It really makes the foundation of our pizza unable to duplicate.”

Their success has translated into three locations, with a fourth on its way. The duo plans to host a grand opening for its newest spot Sept. 21 in the former Baked by Amy’s location at the Austinville 78750 center, 13265 N. US 183, Austin. The center is home to locations of other Austin favorites, including Amy’s Ice Creams, Phil’s Icehouse and The Soup Peddler.

The location, Polk said, was unbeatable, and they have long wanted to come to Northwest Austin.

“We’re excited for that community,” he said.

East Side Pies serves pizza by the slice and whole pie. Customers can also create their own pizzas with a selection of six sauces, including black bean, chimichurri and rosemary-infused olive oil.

About 60 to 70 percent of the restaurant’s produce and meats are also locally sourced from farms such as Johnson’s Backyard Garden, Papalote Farm and Springdale Farm.

“We work with about a dozen farms to get fresh produce,” Polk said.

The new Northwest Austin location will have an air-conditioned indoor area with seating for about 20 guests. A shared outdoor area with seating and a playground is also available at the center.
